DevConf.CZ 2025

Sofía Aritz Albors Escobés

I'm Sofía Aritz, a young programmer passionate about technology as a tool for social transformation. I work on projects with social impact —such as Identity, an initiative designed to contribute to palliative care and the treatment of conditions like dementia— seeking solutions that empower individuals and promote digital autonomy.

I have always been deeply interested in the intersection of the technical, political, and social aspects of Free Software.

My approach to Software development is deeply shaped by my interest in decentralized and federated systems, which I believe are essential for building a fairer and more sustainable technological ecosystem.

I was also a winner of Youth Hacking 4 Freedom 2024, and it was an incredible experience that strengthened my passion for using technology to create a positive impact.

Upcycling Android Workshop
Tobias Diekershoff, Sofía Aritz Albors Escobés

Every year, manufacturers produce 1.5 billion smartphones worldwide - and unfortunately, probably just as many are thrown away after what is usually a far too short hardware lifespan. E-waste increases every year. The energy required to produce the devices is extremely high, and the manufacturing and supply chain spans the globe several times. With Upcycling Android we address the problem by extending the hardware lifespan of phones and Android devices in particular!

With this workshop we want to give everybody the opportunity to flash a custom ROM to a device. We will provide some devices to flash and a live system with all needed parts installed. If you want to try out flashing a device, please bring your own notebook (with 8G or more of memory).

You can find more information about Upcycling Android on the FSFE website.

Identity: Supporting dementia care with Free Software
Sofía Aritz Albors Escobés

In an era where technology increasingly intersects with healthcare, Identity is a Free Software project that allows individuals to store their most meaningful memories. In the event of dementia or memory loss, trusted trustees can access these memories, integrating them into dementia and palliative care.

Identity is nearing the release of new features and a comprehensive revamp, alongside exciting collaborations with other organizations, that will bring it closer to being feature-complete and production-ready. These changes will expand its capabilities and strengthen integrations with healthcare systems.

One of the winning projects of Youth Hacking 4 Freedom 2024, Identity demonstrates how Free Software can help transform healthcare practices, enhancing well-being and promoting more compassionate, personalized care while prioritizing user control and privacy.
